While I was in the Azores, we visited an old area that had several lovely old stone water mills. There was a beautiful waterfall upstream, and like all waterfalls, it was spraying water every which way, and only gradually did the water move down the valley. Closer to the mill was a narrow stone channel, and they cut the shape of the channel to focus and speed up the water that eventually turned the heavy mill stone.
The four weeks we spent together felt like the creation of that stone channel. Before it, I had a waterfall’s worth of ideas and words and phrases, but they were spraying every which way. After the blastoff time, I feel like my writing is the water in the channel, I’m racing along and filling in the details, and it’s progressing directly and smoothly.
